Urgent Jere is 19 years old and lives in Malawi, Africa, where he's known on the air as 7Q6UJ. He holds a US Extra Class license as well (W4UJ). Urgent got into amateur radio after meeting Don Jones, K6ZO/7Q6M, who introduced him to the hobby during the CQWW SSB DX Contest. That was really the turning point — not long after, Urgent set his mind on getting licensed. He studied, passed his exams, and started operating actively pretty quickly. He's competed in the CQWW Contest twice now, first as 7Q1 in 2024 and then as 7Q1A in 2025, and along the way CW and contesting became a real passion of his, something he still practices often.
These days he's a member of CWOPS, PVRC, and ARRL. He also serves as an officer of the MARS (Malawi Amateur Radio Society), where he spends a lot of time helping other operators and growing the hobby back home. On top of that, he's a Volunteer Examiner with WM7X Amateur Radio, so he gets to help newcomers work toward their own licenses too. Outside of radio, Urgent is a first-year Computer Engineering student at the University of Livingstonia in Malawi.
